Lithium Ion (Rechargeable) Batteries

Rechargeable batteries can be a fire hazard when not handled properly.

They do NOT belong in trash bins OR recycling bins.

They need to be treated as household hazardous waste, and taken to a Household Hazardous Waste event or a safe drop-off collection.

Recently, the Lanchester Landfill staff has seen a significant increase in fire and smoke incidents.

These incidents usually occur after the truck loads are dumped, and the trash starts to get compacted for safe landfilling.

Lithium batteries are especially a big hazard, causing a very hot fire that can quickly spread.
